Using My Religion

I can’t believe I almost forgot. Today is the official National Day of Prayer and I have yet to make a list of all the things I’m going to ask God for. Soon it will be too late and I’ll have to wait until next year for my prayers to be answered and the thought of waiting another year to be “discovered” seems way too long. Luckily, despite a federal judge’s ruling that this sacred day was somehow unconstitutional, we pushed onward.

At one of numerous events in our nation’s capital, Day of Prayer organizer Shirley Dobson said, “America was birthed in prayer and founded on the God of the Bible, on his biblical principles and on his moral values.” Ms. Dobson blamed the controversy on a “small band of self-proclaimed atheists and agnostics” determined to “take down this magnificent day.” Ms. Dobson is the wife of James Dobson, founder of Focus on the Family. Wait a minute. Hasn’t Focus on the Family been in the news recently for something other than Christian ministry and traditional family values? Oh, yes. That would be Focus on the Family co-founder George Rekers, the guy who takes male escorts he finds on porn sites on jaunts through Europe with him.

On Capitol Hill, Rev. Franklin Graham, the son of Billy Graham, told the crowd that the removal of prayer from public schools is blurring the line between right and wrong and that if prayer isn’t reinstated, children will become homosexuals but only after spending their lives as evangelicals. Graham’s invitation to speak at the Pentagon was rescinded due to his remarks about Islam: “True Islam cannot be practiced in this country,” he said in December. “You can’t beat your wife. You cannot murder your children if you think they’ve committed adultery or something like that, which they do practice in these other countries.” I don’t see anything wrong with that. Except he forgot to mention that they’re all gay terrorists.

Meanwhile, back to uber-Christian George Rekers, his escort is now saying that Rekers paid him for daily nude massages and his favorite move was “the long stroke.” Come on. Like your baggage handler doesn’t do that.

Before you judge, you should read his strongly-worded response against this blatantly anti-Christian slander/libel campaign on his website:

***MISLEADING INTERNET REPORTS ABOUT PROFESSOR GEORGE REKERS***
A recent article in an alternative newspaper cleverly gave false impressions of inappropriate behavior because of its misleading innuendo, incorrectly implying that Professor George Rekers used the Rentboy website to hire a prostitute to accompany him on a recent trip. Contrary to Internet stories based on this slanderous article, following medical advice Professor George Rekers requires an assistant to lift his luggage in his travels because of an ongoing condition following surgery. His family, local friends, and even another university professor colleague have offered to accompany him on trips to assist him in his travel. Dr. Rekers found his recent travel assistant by interviewing different people who might be able to help, and did not even find out about his travel assistant’s Internet advertisements offering prostitution activity until after the trip was in progress. There was nothing inappropriate with this relationship. Professor Rekers was not involved in any illegal or sexual behavior with his travel assistant.

See? Now go pray, heathens.
